What Goes On

A random bunch of goings-on from a bored (possibly sleep-deprived) hippie-Neopagan-Goddess-worshipping-loony.

I scribbled down a poem this afternoon called "Support Our Troops." 's about how Mr and Mrs Normal "support our troops" but they actually DON'T. They slap the magnet on their car and go about their daily lives, ignoring the war as if it wasn't there. And when the soldiers come home, they get no support. I live next to a military base. The soldiers who die have all the attention. The ones who come back from the war alive? No counseling, and the government goes backsies on that whole "we'll pay for college!" thing. And then there's the reverse-draft. I read about this on the Quaker House website--even if you're discharged, they can still call you back any time they want. The ones who don't go to war at all, but rather have a desk job or something, get even less support. Apparently they're less heroic or something.

I actually quite like soldiers. My stepfather's a soldier. I'm not quite sure what he does, but he went to Iraq a couple times for about a week at a time a few years ago. My mum was a soldier for the greater part of my life. She was in for 20 years, before retiring because of medical problems (her asthma).

It's the war and the government that I don't support. I think soldiers should be brought back home, and when they're brought back home, they should be supported! Given counseling, allowed to leave if they please, given new training for whichever job they wanna take up instead, what-have-you.

I don't think the Endless War will be won with bombs and rockets and guns. I think the war on terrorism will only end when we put forth an example of peace and friendship. Like Jesus would've. If we were to back off of nuclear missiles and shit and instead put that money toward sending food, educational supplies, and medicine to third-world countries without expecting something else in return, I bet people would like this country a whole lot more. We need to show an example! Be the change you wish to see in the world, y'know. We won't bring world peace by riddling women and children full of bullets and flaying "enemies" alive in secret prison rooms. No. We will only lead the world into a new era when we change ourselves for the better.
