When I was little, my papaw Tom made a bunch of comedy tapes for me. Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer, Uncle Jazzbo, that kind of thing. I think it warped me. XD Because, you know, a six-year-old sitting in her room making her Barbies have polyamorous lesbian sex and singing along to The Masochism Tango is bound to be at least a little nutty when she grows up.
And that's the kind of thing I heard as a kid--Smut!, the Masochism Tango, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, Little Blue Riding Hood, St George and the Dragnet, New Math, beatnik fairy tales...
I managed to track down a lot of the Tom Lehrer I remember, and most of the Stan Freberg... but I still can't find the beatnik fairy tales thing. I remember the guy who narrated them was named Uncle Jazzbo. And that Snow White was from the land of Bedelia-ba.
When I was little, I used to believe that the world came into existence with me and would blink out when I died. I wonder if that's true--if we create our own worlds and histories in order to learn the lessons that we need, and once it's over, we disappear and the world is scrapped. What do you think?
I was a weird little kid.
And now I'm a weird semi-adult. XP
